Held in Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta on May 4, 2010, the seminar brought the heat between WP7, iOS, BlackBerry, and Android. Too bad there's no representative from Symbian and Palm, that would make the debate more complete. It was fun as the speakers of each platforms are able to create a healthy debate condition, yet informative.

DyCode CEO, Andri Yadi, was involved as speaker talking about iOS. However, as a Microsoft MVP and being active Windows Phone 7 developer, he and Puja Pramudya (MVP, Device Application Development) also spoke about WP7 and has “obligation” to tell what’s the best of WP7 compared to Android and BlackBerry. The heat between iOS and Android is more seen compared to other OSes, and that reflects what happen in the real world nowadays.

Above all, it's just for fun. Each speakers are not coming from the principals of each OSes, so there's no formal obligation to fight for them.

Photos time.

Beside DyCode this event also sponsored by Nokia, Axis, and other local companies in Jogja.

In that seminar, DyCode CEO, Andri Yadi delivered a talk about Mobile Application Development. He talked about various mobile application development platforms, Windows Phone 7, Symbian, and iOS, among other things. He also gave demos of how to start creating apps in those platforms.

But on this seminar he definitely gave something new and fresh for the audience who mostly are students, and different from the other seminars that he used to speak. He made a demo of how to make a remote control app for a Parrot AR.Drone, a quadrocopter (helicopter with 4 rotor). He played the drone on the hall with his remote control app that he has build just a few moment before it.

The audience seemed very excited, because they could see an app that's fun and real, and demoed in the realtime. Hopefully, with the excitement like that will encourage them to start make mobile apps.

Some photos:

It's very daunting to develop mobile apps without actually testing the developed app to actual devices of targeted platform. Why? Because there're plenty mysteries that can not be covered by simulator, such as responsiveness and user experiences. Even though modern simulator and development environment, such as iOS simulator and Xcode has Instrument and ability to detect performance and memory leaks, it's not as real as if the apps are directly tested on the device.

Hence, actual mobile devices are necessary investment for mobile developer company. To us, we love gadgets, so it's kinda bonus having gadgets, and they can be productive, not just for style.

Indigo Fellowship Award 2010

It’s 2010, the 2010th year of the Common Era or of Anno Domini; the 10th year of the 3rd millennium and of the 21st century; and the 1st decade of the 2010s.

According to an article on CNN, 2010 is the year of Digital Distraction, due to more and more distractions coming from push emails, tweets, status updates, instant messaging, and more, that leads to a big question: productivity boon or bust? If in China, 2010 is the year of Tiger, in the tech world, 2010 will be the year of Tablet. A bevy of tech companies have teased, talked, and have not denied rumors that they are working on a fabled tablet computer, let's say some Google-Android-powered and Google Chrome OS tablets, NVIDIA-powered tablet called “iTablet”, and many more. Some are not rumor anymore, we’ve watched a highly rumored Apple tablet since 2001, finally unveiled on Jan 27 named iPad and now become a mainstream. Microsoft and HP partnering in the development of a slate PC which’s announced at CES 2010 and now the effort is rumored to be cancelled, and instead HP is rumored starting to build a webOS-powered tablet codenamed “HP Hurricane” (as HP recently purchased Palm, the creator of webOS).

2010 is the third year of my company, DyCode. It’s exactly today, May 9, 2010, DyCode is three years old. Happy Birthday again, my child. They say, 3 years will be a turning point for a startup, whether it takes off or taken down. I hope for the best.

Three years is no way an easy life for DyCode and my self. Both of use are tested over and over again. I’m recently offered to leave DyCode to fill a very prestigious position as a director in a subsidiary company (in Indonesia) of a biggest software company in the world. I’m sure you know what company I refer to, as it’s very close to every INDC members. Fortunately, I’m managed to turn down the temptation (after a long and deep thinking, with a little regret honestly), and stay with DyCode as long as it takes.

What happened within DyCode recently before its three year, I’ll share below.

New Plex

For me and DyCode, we start this decade of 2010s with the new DyPlex. Yes, the new DyCode office. Since founded on May 9, 2007, DyCode stayed at the same home office, it was at Jl. Gemi No. 11A, Bandung.

“Dynamic” is the first word of DyCode's name. Dynamism is DyCode's paradigm. It's all about the ability to change or to adapt. DyCode is changing and keeps changing. It has more DyCoders, more assets, and more works. To adapt to those changes, there is a most basic thing that need to adapt, a place to work, a nicer and bigger DyPlex. The old DyPlex seems unable to handle the number of DyCoders, assets, and works.

The search of new DyPlex was no way an easy task. Location, location, location, is the number one criteria. DyCode’s clients are mostly not in Bandung, they are in Jakarta, Cilegon, outside Java, or even abroad, hence the access to highway should be easy and fast. Programming is brain-intensive work and stress-prone, so the access to near cinema and entertainment center is important. But good location is useless when the building itself is not comfortable for working. A homie, spacious, good air circulation, abundant sunlight are must. We still choose a home-office, instead of office building in some business centers. DyCode wants its DyCoders to work comfortably, warm, and able to stay until late night if they have to.

After 3 months of searching, visiting more than 10 house candidates in varying locations, finally we ended up to this coordinate: -6.876482, 107.584389 or -6 52' 35.34", +107 35' 3.80". It's addressed: Jl. Setrasari Kulon II No. 2, Bandung, 40152. Here's the map:

Setrasari is a well known area in Bandung. It’s the housing complex where the big houses located, and has a combination of nice neighborhood, quiet, and as cold as you never need air conditioner anymore.

This map shows how the new DyPlex is reachable from Pasteur road, after highway exit gate.

The route from a well-know and traffic-jam-causer mall in Bandung, Paris Van Java (PVJ).

Photos

If you’re wondering how the new DyPlex looks like, I’ll post some photos.

The front view

The gardens

And another garden…

The interior

The guest room

The fingerprint time-attendance machine, next to the door

Developers room. We hire a chef (sort of) to prepare great lunch.

It’s nice place to work, isn’t it? We’re really excited about it and love working here everyday. It’s the result of three years hard-works. We’ve come a long way from just a micro ISV with six people and working in a small home-office and limited facility, to this comfy office and good facility. If you’d like to taste it, come and join to DyCode.

New Logo

For past three years, DyCode has used the same logo. It’s very simple logo, I admit. I recall one day I delivered a training, a trainee asked me, “your company’s logo is just like that, sir?”. “Well, yes”, I answered.

Glass effect was a trend at that time, so we adopted it. I’m sure we remember Vista used glass effect all over the place. The simple butterfly-like wireframe in the middle is actually the result of combining characters “D” and “C”, as the first characters of “Dy” and “Code”. Those “D” and “C” characters are not coming form English alphabet, instead, they are Futhorc, a runic alphabet used by Anglo-Saxons. The fusion of those two characters are illustrated below. The fusion result is then skewed and given a glass effect, and there you go, DyCode logo. We deliberately made the logo looked like a butterfly, as some of DyCode’s nature are inspired by butterfly.

As the time goes by, we realized that the initial logo was not appropriate anymore. Not only because the artwork seems old-fashioned and rigid, but it’s also our need to more express our dynamism and spirit. As implied in DyCode’s name, we need to keep changing and adapt to the change. And here it is, I proudly and officially announce the DyCode’s new logo:

So, what’s the meaning? I copy-paste the description from its designer (thanks to Ms. Gina):

Logo perusahaan PT.

IT Solution For Optimal Business Value" .

Arti Warna

Penggunaan warna pada logo PT. Dycode Cominfotech Development mengandung arti psikologis sebagai berikut :

By the way, we’ve registered the logo to Ditjen HKI, Departemen Hukum dan HAM (Law and Human Right Department of Indonesia). Wait for one year or more before it’s legally registered.

So that’s all I can tell in this post. Once again, Happy 3rd Birthday to DyCode. As Vulcan always salutes, “Live long and prosper”.

Sincerely,
Andri Yadi, CEO

MOVREAK

Movreak or Movie Freak is what movie freaks need, an app for supporting their addiction of watching movie at cinemas/theaters. Movreak app is used for viewing and sharing movies' show time and place. You can browse now-playing movies, check the show time & places, and share to your friends by email or SMS. Or rather, if you're stuck in place where there's a theater nearby and you want to kill time by watching any movies there, then you simply just browse what movies are playing in that theater. Still, you still have a chance to bring along your friends to watch movie with you, by sharing the show time to them.

Current version of Movreak only supports data for Indonesia country. In Indonesia, it's hard to check daily movie schedule from all cinemas, there is no single dedicated website/portal for such information. Movreak will be your only source of movie and schedule information for all cinemas, both 21 Cineplex and Blitz Megaplex. More countries and cities coming up in the next version.

We work really hard to make Movreak app has simple UIs, intuitive, easy to use, yet still pay attention to aesthetics. Here're some screenshots.

Setting. Ability to change City (among other things), will instantly change now playing and theater list and show time.

Multi language: English and Bahasa

Next version:
Integration with Facebook in a way you can't imagine. The event was held by all DyCoders and some of them also brought their family member, to join us celebrating our CEO Andri Yadi's 28 birthday.

At the same time, iPhone OS 4 preview is officially announced today, Apr 8, 2010 10.00AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). That time is equal to April 9, 2010 00:00AM West Indonesia Time. So, we can say that the birthday is celebrated with the announcement of iPhone OS 4. Thanks Apple!

Actually until a moment before the event started, Andri yadi have no idea what will we made for celebrating his birthday, it was a little surprise party for him from us, DyCoders.

There was some delicious food served in the table, and our CRO represent the other DyCoders to give the birthday cake. He a bid surprised by the event, so that's mean we did it. Keynote delivered by our CEO and manager, after that all DyCoders ate together. The moment was very warm and friendly, we really enjoy that simple event in our DyPlex.

We would like to say Happy Birthday for the second time for our CEO. Hopefully this year ahead is gonna be the best and more successes and can bring DyCode become bigger and bigger.

Nasi Tumpeng Komplit

The Birthday Cake

Sambutan dari Manager dan berdoa bersama

Pembukaan oleh CEO

DyCoders and some of them bring their family member too.

Potong tumpeng

He started his presentation with a huge number of Microsoft Office users base. Around 500 million people on the planet use MS Office, which is 7.5% of world population. That number indicates that many users have found Office is very useful and are familiar with it. In term of developing Line of Business application, why not developing the solution on top of Office, instead of developing from scratch. Andri’s trying to “brainwash” the participants that Office is not just a productivity tool, it’s a platform. For ISVs, it should open a new market opportunity for them, for building solutions based on Office.

How can we extend or customize Office to fit users’ need for supporting their business? VSTO is the answer. And VSTO in Visual Studio 2010 delivers many improvement, especially in deployment, C# supports, and UI extensibility. In this talk, Andri focused to talk about UI extensibility in Office 2010 and demonstrated developing Office Business Application using Visual Studio 2010. He also showed some successful implementations, both proof of concepts (POCs) and real world application, that his company DyCode already developed.

The participant was around 50, coming from varying size of ISVs in Java island, Indonesia. Andri was successfully to amaze them all with the presentation and demo, and also the big opportunity they can explore.

The complete presentation slide is here: http://www.slideshare.net/andri_yadi/office-2010-development-in-visual-studio-2010

Preparing SMTP Service for Sending Alert in SharePoint 2010

OK, posting cepat aja supaya gak kelupaan.

To send email-based alerts on SharePoint, you need to configure outgoing e-mail settings first. Buka SharePoint 2010 Central Administration, klik quick launch System Settings, and you’ll find following screen.

Clicking Configure Outgoing e-mail settings, and you’ll find this screen:

Just type Outgoing SMTP Server host/IP address, From email address, Reply-to email address, and select Character set. DONE. Now, the real challenge is preparing SMTP service to be used for sending emails from SharePoint, including alerts.

Basically, you can use any SMTP server. But to me, I prefer to use the built-in SMTP Server in Windows Server 2008 R2. Akan tetapi, SMTP Server dalam Windows Server, yang biasa dikenal sebagai IIS SMTP Service, is not full-fledge mail server. In this case, I will use this IIS SMTP Service as a relay to Gmail. This walkthrough should be the same for other mail server, other than Gmail.

Installing SMTP Server feature

AFAIK, SMTP Server is not installed by default in Windows Server 2008 R2, probably in previous Windows Server as well. To make sure it’s installed or not, open Server Manager, click Features, you should see this screen if it’s installed.

If not, just click Add Features, then select SMTP Server. Will show the question to activate other features that SMTP Server has dependency with, e.g. IIS 6.0 Manager. Just accept them all unless you know what you’re doing. Supposed to be easy task.

Configuring SMTP Server

I assume the SMTP Server is installed successfully, tibalah saatnya untuk mengkonfigurasinya. As I said, I will use this SMTP Server as a relay to Gmail mail server.

1. Open IIS 6.0 Manager

2. ‘Singkapkan’ (ckckck…singkap…) nama host dimana SMTP service berjalan, sehingga muncul SMTP Virtual Server #1. Click kanan padanya –> click Properties, dan tampillah:

3. Click Access Tab, you’ll find:

Click Authentication button, you’ll find Authentication dialog as above.

4. Click Relay button, and you’ll find Relay Restrictions dialog. Here you can specify which computers that are able to use this SMTP Server as relay, by selecting “All except the list below” and adding computers’ IP address. I leave it empty for now.

5. Now, get you mouse to Delivery tab. I prefer this settings for Outbound.

Click Outbound Security. Then select Basic authentication. Type your username and password for authenticating to relay mail server. For Gmail, input your Gmail email address and password. Also for Gmail, make sure to check “TLS encryption”. Click OK.

Back to Delivery tab, now click “Outbound connections”. You’ll have screen as follow. For Gmail, use TCP port 587. Click OK.

Now, back to Delivery tab, click “Advanced…” button. Type you FQDN mail domain. For Gmail, make sure to type smtp.gmail.com for Smart host.

That’s it.

5. Go to SharePoint Central Administration for updating Outgoing email settings with this SMTP service host/IP address.

Ya seperti yang ditulis di atas, input IP address/hostname where the SMTP Server is running. Also input “From address” and “Reply-to address”. Make sure to use available email address in Gmail. It would be good if you use the same email address as inputted on Outbound Security - Basic authentication.

6. Testing alert

Now setup your alert in SharePoint (I won’t show you how). Trigger it. Hopefully the alert email is sent. If not, go back and make sure you follow the walkthrough carefully, and use your developer/IT pro’s instinct to solve the problem.

That’s it. Good luck.

Office Business Application Training

Office Business Application (OBA) is booming. Seems like Microsoft is diligently doing evangelism in this area to leverage their Office platform. Microsoft Indonesia, in this case, is preparing both partner and customer in order to adopt more deeply Office platform into their business solutions. The coming Microsoft Office 2010 is gonna be huge in term of features, customizability, and solutions to deliver.

One of Microsoft Indonesia’s initiatives to prepare Indonesia Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to adopt Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) for building OBA, a training was delivered on Jan 13 – 15, 2010. The training was participated by 15 developers coming from some well known ISVs in Jakarta. DyCode CEO, Andri Yadi, had privilege to become the trainer.

Office 2010 Development on Microsoft Student Partner Gathering

As part of corporate responsibility to the youngsters, and as a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP), Andri Yadi (CEO of DyCode), represents his company and his expertise, giving a motivational and technical speak on Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) gathering.
The gathering was organized by MSP – Bandung chapter, held at Bandung Electronic Mall (Be Mall) on Nov 29, 2009. On this event, Andri gave motivational talk about how the students should be thankful for and use the opportunity offered in MSP program optimally, how to become an expert in certain IT area, and how to become more success later when they jump into IT jungle after graduation. As for technical speak, Andri talked about development in Office 2010, the latest Microsoft Office, using Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) 2010, included in Visual Studio 2010. He also talked about updates on Office development from Microsoft Professional Developer Conference (PDC) 2009, that’s recently held on Los Angeles, Nov 17 – 19, 2009.

The MSP students attending the gathering are coming from different backgrounds and interests, but still in IT and mostly interest in software development. The introduction of VSTO and Office development delivered by Andri, has changed their perspective about Office, which is not only productivity tool but also development platform. Some of students have expressed their interest to explore more about VSTO and Office development. DyCode invites them to come to DyPlex and willing to facilitate their interest to learn more about VSTO. Off course, DyCode is ready hire them after reaching certain skills.

While leaders such as Singapore, Hong Kong and others have instituted integrated information systems that utilize modern technology, Indonesia has continued to rely on outdated and largely manual systems that are slow, expensive, and make it difficult to prevent or detect fraud and corruption. This is particularly troublesome in light of Indonesia’s exceptional need for good port management, as a nation consisting of many scattered islands.

Early attempts by the Batam Port Authority to address this problem were unsuccessful when the software they tested did not enable port activities to be aligned with international best practices in port administration and management. Confident that it possessed the technical know-how to address this problem, the firm PT Dycode Cominfotech Development submitted a proposal to iMULAI (a special national software innovation competition under SENADA’s Business Innovation Fund that is operated in partnership with Microsoft Indonesia) to develop web-based software capable of bringing Indonesian port activities up to international standards. The firm was one of three iMULAI winners, and received a grant for Rp 225,000,000 between June and December 2008 to create a specialized port management portal. PT Dycode’s new software, dubbed PortMAP, is designed to manage a wide variety of Indonesian port activities, including docking schedules, cargo loading, berthing times and departure dates. Local engineers and developers created a system that allows effective management of activities at a detailed level in both the Port Authority office and in the field at each port.

PortMAP is also designed to integrate information on the movement of goods in a manner that permits the Authority to do comprehensive surveillance and monitoring. Launched publicly on November 26, 2008, PortMAP has proved an immediate success, performing effectively in Indonesia’s six largest ports. Following the testing, Port Authority officials requested additional customization of the software so that it can be implemented not only in the biggest ports but also in over 100 additional, smaller ports under the Batam Port Authority. The PortMAP software is now available for sale in the market by contacting www.dycode.com The “Dycode” in the company name “PT Dycode Cominfotech Development” is a combination of the words dynamic and code. The name was chosen to reflect the dynamic nature of the company’s objectives, using code as the tool to accomplish them. The company was founded by six young IT practitioners in April of 2007, and has already grown to a staff of 42 technical and support staff. Its mission is to deliver dynamic, mature and requirement compliant IT solutions that optimize clients' business value. The Business Innovation Fund (BIF) is an initiative launched in June, 2007 by SENADA. BIF offers short-term, high impact grants for the development of innovative products for the value chains where SENADA focuses. Details can be found at www.senada.or.id/innovation. SENADA is a four-year, USAID-financed project whose goal is to increase Indonesia's economic growth and employment by improving the competitiveness of major, labor-intensive light manufacturing industries.

Started in September 2005, the objective of SENADA is to generate growth, jobs and income by increasing the competitiveness of Indonesia’s major labor intensive light manufacturing industries. SENADA focuses on five industries: footwear, home furnishing, auto parts, garments and information and communications technology (ICT)/Knowledge Development.

This event was attended by many important guests, such as the National Minister of State Development Planning - Bpk. H. P.Suzetta, USAID Mission Director - Walter North, and Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry - Agus Tjahyana Wirakusumah. The primary objective of this event was to present the results achieved by SENADA and lessons learned that they gained, including the benefits that have been received by SENADA stakeholders, from the government, industry, universities, associations and donors.

In this event, DyCode as a partner of SENADA represented by Andri Yadi, CEO of DyCode, provided some information about the impacts and benefits those are received by DyCode from SENADA project. Andri Yadi became one of the panelists in the "Accelerated Innovation" (“Inovasi Terpacu”) panel . Some of the information delivered by Andri Yadi was the explanation of how the program iMULAI innovation competition (the collaboration between Microsoft and SENADA) could stimulate the spirit of innovation, so that DyCode could achieved success. In that competition, DyCode with its PORTMAP was the first champion among so many participants from across Indonesia, a very brilliant achievement and it opens the highly opportunities of DyCode to compete in this industry.

DyCode is very thankful to SENADA. Hopefully, the innovation spirit triggered by SENADA and iMULAI will be sustainable in the future.

Rundown acara SENADA Partners Conference:

Light Up Your Office: Visual Studio Tools for Office

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009, Microsoft Indonesia held an event entitled "Light Up Your Office: Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO)" at Microsoft Auditorium, BEJ building, Sudirman Jakarta.

The event was held for about 8 hours, it was start at 8 in the morning and finished at 5 pm.
